"Same Old Lang Syne" by Dan Fogelberg

It is always freaks me out when I find a song like this that I would swear I'd already posted.  How could I have missed a song like this.  This song just always touched something in me.

The video telling the (true) story behind the song is cool.  Bringing back memories and wondering how different your life would be if we had made a different choice at some point in the past...

Naturally, I can't help but wonder what my life would have been like if I had grown up as a girl.  But I can't regret my life, even though I hated who I was,  it was good.  And now that I'm Rachel it's great!

Anyway, here is a newspaper article about the story:

Journal Star: http://www.pjstar.com/x1101623574/Luciano-Its-a-memory-that-I-cherish

Since I cry with this song, I thought perhaps the "the snow turned into rain" was a metaphor for his tears being the rain.  But the one video shows a letter where Dan replied and said that was another true part of the snow really did turn to rain.

"Message of Love" by The Pretenders

This song came on KCQN a few minutes ago and I don't think I've ever paid attention to the lyrics before.  It is so funny that I can know the lyrics by heart and never conceptualize their meaning.  Anyway, aside from the "as man and woman" part they are awesome!  We all need to "love each other, take care of each other".

Now look at the people
They're in the streets, in the bars
We are all of us in the gutter
Some of us are looking at the stars

Look 'round the room
Life is unkind
We fall but we keep gettin' up
Over and over and over
...
Now the reason we're here
Every man, every woman
Is to help each other
Stand by each other

"Silver Bells" by Brenda Lee

Another Christmas favorite and I think this may be my favorite rendition.  I love the feeling this song invokes.

This album was one of the favorite Christmas records in my family, one that got played over and over every year.

"Variations on a Theme by Eric Satie" by Blood, Sweat & Tears

I heard Trois Gymnopedies playing on my acupuncturist's iPod a while ago and it drove me crazy for a while trying to figure out why it sounded so familiar, but different.

I notice on the original record album cover it is listed as "Variations on a Theme by Eric Satie", with a 'C' instead of a 'K'.   Apparently the error was on the album cover: https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Erik_Satie

"This Diamond Ring" by Gary Lewis & the Playboys

Yet another song that I can't believe I haven't posted before!  This song is now associated with two epic events in my life:

This is actually the first record album I ever bought with my own money.  Prior to this, my parents or grandparents had always paid for it when I wanted a record album.  I can still visualize the record rack there in Wangsgards on 2nd Street and Washington Blvd. in Ogden, Utah.

And then earlier this year, when I received an reply to my first "coming out" email, which I had sent to one of my dearest friends Stefanie.  I read her reply and it was so loving and accepting.

I put this record on and when the first notes played I just broke down crying.  It was a delightful, wonderful, happy cry.  I was so overcome with emotion.

I don't think it had any relation to the song itself, it was just hearing those notes that I've loved for 50 years, coupled with the love and acceptance I felt.

I was pretty scared at that point, not knowing how people would react.  I picked Stefanie because she has always been such an amazing and loving woman.  I had no doubt that she would be accepting of my change.  I think it was just seeing it there in black and white that filled me with emotion.

And now I'm crying again just telling the story  :)

I decided to get the total experience again, so I dug out the record and I'm listening to it now.  At first I thought something was wrong with my mixer because there wasn't anything coming out of the right speaker.  After fooling around with it, I realized this was one of those records from the early days of Stereo where, they hard panned instruments and/or voices left or right.  I hate those early Beatles records where the instruments are all in one channel and the vocals are all in the other.  Yuck!

I notice the audio in the "Topic" video, from the Liberty/Capitol Complete Collection is in mono.

Note: the one 45 in the video is one of the cheap (?) ones where they didn't affix a color paper label, but instead printed the label right on the plastic disc.

"My Favorite Things" by We Five

I was listening to the A&M "Something Festive" album this morning.  I think it is one of the best Christmas albums ever!  Well worth the 50 cents I paid for the copy I took the picture of below, LOL!  I posted a couple of other songs from it 3 years ago on 22-Dec-2012 and last year on 26-Dec-2014.

One thing I found interesting on the album, though, the two Herb Alpert and the Tijuauna Brass tracks had the intros cut off.  The commercial for the album is also on YouTube.  That's so cool!  Originally it cost $1.29 in B.F. Goodrich stores.

"25 O'Clock" by The Dukes of Stratosphear

I posted their song that I first heard on KCGL way back in the 80's on my old blog (before I transitioned) on 4-Oct-2012.  This is another song I love!

"What's With You" by Mose Allison

You can read more of the story on how I discovered Mose Allison in my post for 5-Aug-2011.  I just love the lyrics in many of his songs, witty and sometimes sarcastic.

You told me what I was doin' wrong
You told me that I wouldn't be here long
You told all the things I didn't do
...
Don't think I don't appreciate your grave concern
...
Don't think I don't appreciate your sage advice
...
So now won't you tell me what's with you?

"We R In Need Of A Musical ReVoLuTIoN" by Esthero

I love this song... "I'm so tired of then same old shit on the radio".  It reminds me how cool it was when KCGL appeared on the scene in the 80's, it was NEW!

I *LOVE* the "Director's Cut" is so fun!

"Twilight World" by Swing Out Sister

Don't be fooled by love songs and lonely hearts, you're living in a twilight world...

I always thought the "Gas Distress Mix" was really fun.  And I love the "Live at the Jazz Cafe" version!  As I mentioned in my  post on 20-Jan-2015 and I still claim that "Live at the Jazz Cafe" is the best live album ever!

"Take the Long Way Home" by Supertramp

It drives me crazy when I discover that a song like this that I haven't posted until now!  This is definitely a song that I've always related to.  So many times I've taken the long way home...

But I can't find a video on YouTube with the original version.  I've found many by Rodger Hodson of Supertramp.

I like this version by Roger Hodson with vocal by Robert Wilson.  I really, really love the images in the video.

"Desire" by Meg Myers

Last night was the darkest I've ever felt as Rachel.  The first time I've not liked Rachel.  I saw this band on Alt 94.9 now 101.9 and this dark song came to mind.

"The Snake" by Johnny Rivers

Update 30-July-2020: although it was unthinkable back in 2015, Doland Trump was elected President in 2016.  He has been a horrific nightmare!!  This ad uses the poem / lyrics to the song, Trump IS THE SNAKE!!
