"For What It's Worth" by Buffalo Springfield

I loved this short open clip for Stephen Colbert's Late Show, "Bathroom Signs have a Message for Trump" - it certainly sums up how I feel...

YouTube (Late Show): https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=QI76-QkQVss

I also love this monologue, especially the line about "which is good, 'cause I'm guessing right now a lot of trans people would love to take a dump in Trump's lobby".

YouTube (LateShow): https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=PwdZVbVvEL8

If you want to skip the first segment, this link starts at time 2:36 where the trans bathroom part starts: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=PwdZVbVvEL8&t=2m36s

I still have high hopes for the Gavin Grimm - Supreme Court case.  See my posts for 16-Feb-2017 and 23-Feb-2017 for more on Gavin.

#StandWithGavin

This is another song that I was surprised I haven't posted before.  But in this case I'm very happy I hadn't, as it is perfect for this time.

"Symphony for the Devil" by Blood, Sweat & Tears

I cannot believe these rants about "Fake News" it is totally insane!  Do Trump's followers actually believe these news organizations are making up fake news?!?  I'm so happy that I signed up for The New York Times, supporting such a well respected news organization.

I loved some of these videos about the "fake news".  I especially like that FoxNews is supporting CNN.  But my favorite is Jon Stewart on the Late Show.

YouTube (Fox News): https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=LOAD0_Ito8E
YouTube (Late Show): https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=cmdFne7LnuA

Watching the clips with Trump railing about "fake news" this morning and this song popped into my head.  It was funny that I found a video where somebody else made the same connection, using the Rolling Stones version:

YouTube (Trump/Stones): https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ZLouK-eI49A

Anyway, I first heard this song by Blood, Sweat & Tears and it is still my favorite:

"Trouble Me" by 10,000 Maniacs

I went up to the Roy Southwest Library this afternoon, where Misty K. Snow and Genevra spoke about the run for U.S. Senate.  It was a small group, but a very nice discussion.

I heard this on 103.1 The Wave earlier and was thinking about how I hope to support my friends and my fellow transgender sisters and brothers.

"7 Years" by Lukas Graham

I've rewritten and rearranged this post like 6 or 7 times and it keeps coming out a jumble.  It's days late at this point.  I've decided to apply the KISS principal (Keep It Simple Stupid) and just state the thoughts I had and leave filling in the blanks as "an exercise for the reader"...

  • Wendy Jean found a really old photo of me when I was young.
  • It has to be more than 50 years old.
  • This song has the line "soon I'll be 60 years old".
  • I transitioned when I was 60.
  • Being transgender is THE best thing that ever happened to me.
  • I love the line in this song: "'cause I know the smallest voices, they can make it major".
  • To my transgender sisters, brothers and our allies, keep letting your voices be heard
  • History is on our side :)

"Powerful People" by Gino Vannelli

I was delight to see this morning that Cailyn Jenner has denounced Trump's rescinding the transgender bathroom policy, calling it a disaster:

CBS News: http://www.cbsnews.com/news/caitlyn-jenner-tells-trump-his-reversal-on-transgender-rights-is-a-disaster/

Washington Post: https://www.washingtonpost.com/amphtml/news/reliable-source/wp/2017/02/24/caitlyn-jenner-defended-trump-now-she-says-his-bathroom-order-is-a-disaster/

I know Caitlyn lives in a world completely different and even opposite than the vast majority of us. But I truly believe her heart is in the right place.  I take this video as a sign that she will stand with us.

"Strange Fruit" by Billie Holiday

I was dismayed to hear about "the president that shall not be named" rescinding the transgender bathroom policy that the Obama administration put in place.  So FRUSTRATING!!

I saw two videos from The View this morning, the first one where they discuss it and I completely agree with Whoopie's rant:

YouTube (The View):  https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=dOmDjFMRUgY

The second one they have Gavin Grimm on the show and Lavern Cox on the phone (see my post on Feb 16th).

YouTube (The View): https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=5IUCf58Nlhk

#StandWithGavin

I got sucked in by some troll and wasted an hour and a half writing some (hopefully intelligent) reply trying to explain our challenges.  Wendy Jean pointed out it was likely a waste of time.

Anyway, SueZQ mentioned similarities to the Civil Rights Movement and I was thinking about that and this song came to mind.

The "history" video made me SICK!  A part of U.S. history we should ALL be ashamed of!!  But what is frightening is that we have racist and sexist people in the administration now.

"Underneath the Radar" by Underworld

My friend Brighton said something yesterday it's just something every day!  It's just overwhelming!!  Every single day there is just more shit!

I've been fighting this virus since Friday night and it is nasty.  I've started writing blog posts for the last few days but there is so much shit going on that I want to post and I feel so shitty I haven't finished them yet.

But this is VERY IMPORTANT so I'm going to publish todays post before I finish my backlog.  There is a committee meeting tonight for Utah Women Unite and I want to invite everyone to attend if you can.

It starts at 7 PM at the Clubhouse - 850 E. South Temple in Salt Lake City

Our Facebook page is https://www.facebook.com/UTAHWOMENUNITE/

The first thing I was greeted with this morning was this video with a Whoopie rant that I agree with:

YouTube (The View): https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=oqBZDmMsTRo

SueZQ and I were watching the PBS News Hour and saw the story on coal country and it was heartbreaking.  They contrasted that young man who totally wants to go work in a coal mine to support his family with the older gentleman with Black Lung Disease.

Coal just can't be the future!  SueZQ said that was where Hillary failed.  She should have engaged the people, in situations like these, with retraining programs.  Put them to work in fields with a future.

Anyway, thinking about how "under the weather" I am this morning reminded me of this song.

However, NOW more than ever, is the time to do exactly the opposite of being under the radar, we need to make our voices heard!   I hope to see everybody at the Utah Women Unite committee meeting tonight!

Sigh!  YouTube popped up an ad for the Bears Ears National Monument and the Southern Utah Wilderness Alliance today and I was looking at all the beautiful scenes on their website.  There is NO Undo command for the Earth!  If we fuck up this planet that's it, GAME OVER!!!

"Run For Your Life" by Nancy Sinatra

I started posting this song by The Beatles, but I don't like the lyrics being so misogynistic.  I don't know if that's the correct word, it's just that Women are abused more often.

I was going to talk about gender flipping the lyrics, which I try to do a lot when I'm singing certain songs.  But then I remembered this Nancy Sinatra version that I've always liked.

"Chinese Cafe/Unchained Melody" by Joni Mitchell

The overall effect of MS is that it makes me slow.  I don't have good control of my fingers, so far too often I hit the wrong keys.  Sometimes over and over and over.  I think slow.  I forget what I'm doing.  I get confused about what I'm doing.

So I've realized I'm never going to catch up on all the blog posts I started and haven't finished (as of the moment I'm writing this there are 58 draft posts).

So I've decided to just post them irght now, without photos or comments and just one link to a video and maybe someday, somehow I will find to add photos, comments and finish them.  But for now...

"99.9 F" by Suzanne Vega

I must've caught what SueZQ has had for a week.  Last night I had to have had a nasty fever, I was in bed with all the covers over me and I was freezing like never before.  I was curled up in a ball and covered in goosebumps.

I love the bass line in this song and the line "it could be normal, but it isn't quite"...

YouTube (Vevo): https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=uEvjFThqmq0

Here's another Samantha Bee video about how America is moving backwards (see yesterday's post).  This just makes me sick: coal companies dumping debris into rivers and rolling back protections on endangered species.

"Walking Backwards Down the Road" by The Brothers Four

I remember Paige said right after the election last November that we can't be going backwards this way.  Since then many other people have expressed their dismay over how we seem to be taking a huge step backwards.  I fear that is exactly what is happening :(

I found another Samantha Bee - Full Frontal that I really love: "We're Still Not There: A Practical Guide to Resistance" that interviews some of the people from the Civil Rights Movement from 50-60 years ago.  I think one of the opening lines is relevant to this discussion: "As America moves rapidly BACKWARDS in time".

YouTube (Full Frontal): https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=npZF5gJHhZM

Unfortunately I can't find the version of this song by The Brothers Four on YouTube.  This version by Studio Group is pretty good though.

I had lunch earlier today with 3 delightful women.  It was so wonderful meeting Kat, one of the organizers of Utah Women Unite.  I was disturbed to hear that the legislature is stonewalling us and holding the bills that are important to women in committee so they won't even come up for a vote.

"At the End of a Song" by Carpenters

Update 18-Feb-2017:

MS is just so frustrating some days... okay, all the time :(  I intended to write a thank you to Laverne Cox in this post and of course I spaced off the most important part.  Sigh!!

@LaverneCox - Thanks you so much for not just the #StandWithGavin, but for all the things you do for our community!  You are so beautiful and amazing!  I know it absolutely helps for people to see us and recognize we are just normal human beings and not freaks.

Original post:

I've been feeling so maudlin lately.  I've had this song stuck in my head for several days now.  So even though I posted a Carpenters song on Valentine's Day, I'm going to post another one.

Like "Ordinary Fool" this song is also from the Voice of the Heart album.  I'm going to have to say I agree with the first two lines:

They tell me somewhere this life isn't crazy
But I've traveled the world far and wide and I say they're wrong

Unfortunately, it feels like it has been even more crazy this year (and I thought 2016 was a crazy year, HA HA!).

"Lady Killer" by Nicky Holland

Update 27-Feb-2020: added a Vevo, official video:

YouTube (Vevo): https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=upAR0W0YAc0

Original post:

Another day I had far too many songs to choose from.  I was thinking of the song "Coloring Blue" which was the first song by Nicky Holland I ever heard.  It was when I was in Orlando, Florida around 1994.  When I got home I picked up her self-titled album, which became one of my favorite albums of all time.

Unfortunately, I can only find a couple of her tracks on YouTube and "Coloring Blue" isn't one of them.  This is another wonderful song, the opening track on the CD and it has Lloyd Cole helping out.

"Ordinary Fool" by Carpenters

I really struggled to decide which song to post for today, Valentine's Day.  I finally narrowed it down to three different Carpenter's songs.  I finally decided on this one because... I don't know... I love the saxophone in it?

It was included on the "Voice of the Heart" album that was released after Karen's passing.  It was recorded in 1976, but not released on the "A Kind of Hush" album.

"I Left My Heart in San Francisco" by Tony Bennett

I don't have a solid explanation for it, but San Francisco has always felt like my real home, the place where I belong.  My only theory is I lived there in a former life.  I can so relate to the line "When I come home to you, San Francisco, your golden sun will shine for me!".

A couple of days ago, when I was updating my post from 19-July-2011, I mentioned my trips to San Francisco to see Swing Out Sister were the best trips of my life.  They were some of the best days of my life.

I guess my heart really is in San Francisco because that is the city I love!

"The Shadow of Your Smile" by Manhattan Jazz Orchestra

This morning I was listening to this old cassette that I copied from a reel-to-reel tape that originated in the original HiFi Shop in Ogden, Utah (infamously the site of the HiFi Shop Murders).  I talked about these tapes years ago in my post on 5-Aug-2011.

The version of this song is just so smooth and dreamy, I love it.  But I have no way of identifying the artist(s).  I've tried many times and Shazam just doesn't work on old, non hit tracks like the ones on these tapes.

So I found this version by the Manhattan Jazz Orchestra, it is very nice.  I like it.  The version on the cassette has a very nice saxophone solo, so I've added the Boots Randolph and the Dexter Gordon Quartet for some nice sax sounds.

"Hallelujah" by Jeff Buckley

I finished reading the book "Raising Ryland" a few weeks ago (see my posts on 15-Apr-2015 and 28-Dec-2016).  I thoroughly enjoyed it.  It was fascinating getting more perspective, especially from his mother.

This morning I came across a video from CBS This Morning talking about the book and the family.  Just wonderful, very nice!  It too made me cry (the original video still makes me cry every time I watch it).

YouTube (CBS): https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=fcD5NOIalQo

Also found another video about another transgender boy:

YouTube (WLWT): https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=vDke58X79d4

Anyway this is one of the pieces of music used in the original Ryland's Story video that his mom, Hillary, made.

Update 11-Feb-2017: I was listening to this song again this morning and these words caught my attention.  (I've mentioned here: 27-July-2015 and here: 26-Dec-2015 that I sometimes don't pay attention to what the lyrics are actually saying.)  Anyway this is an interesting verse:

Maybe there is a God above
But all I've ever learned from love

"Eleanor Rigby" by The Beatles

I've been thinking about the verse I mentioned last year in my post for "Becoming a Nun" by Vanessa Daou on 16-May-2016 and it still rings true:

I think I can live without it
Love with it's pumping blood
Sex with it's messy hungers
Men with their peacock strut

I thought I had perhaps found someone of interest on OkCupid but it suddenly veered off in an unexpected and unwanted direction and then quickly spun completely out of control.  I'm taking a break from OkCupid again.

But it struck me how many lonely people there are in the world, which reminded me of this song.  I guess things haven't changed much in 50 years.  :(

Update 10-Feb-2017:

My friend Jimmy told me about a couple of phone apps called "Her" and "Gendr" that look pretty cool, I'm going to check them out.  It's very cool there is a dating app for the Gender Variant & Queer community.

"Handcuffed to a Fence in Mississippi" by Jim White

I was updating one of my very first posts on 15-July-2011 this morning and came across this song.  It was love at first listen!

I love Jim White, so fascinating!  Even more so after I listened to the short video where he talks about "A Perfect Day to Chase Tornadoes" that I added to my old post.

I love the line about waking to find his Trans Am gone.  "But things are always better than they seem."

"Poker Face" by Lady Gaga

I'm not really that into sports, but I have to say that was easily the best Super Bowl ever tonight.  And I loved the halftime show with Lady Gaga.  I really couldn't decide which song of hers I wanted to post.  Finally decided that I should do this one since it is the one we usually play when we are DJ'ing dances.

"How Can I Be Sure?" by The Young Rascals

I thought of this song because I never feel really sure how I sound when I'm singing.  The Hearfones that Mindy suggested made an incredible difference when I'm practicing, but the add a funny resonance if I wear them while recording.

On a side note (pun intended), I absolutely recommend Mindy Pack http://www.mindypack.com/ for vocal coaching.  She is absolutely amazing, she literally changed my life!  I was absolutely 100% convinced that I could never sing and she proved me wrong.  It is so much fun!  I can't even explain how much I enjoy it!

Anyway, on a completely different note (another pun intended LOL) - "how can I be sure" also applies to the current environment.  It's like no one can be sure what this administration is going to do next.  And even more so for us transgender people.  He has nominated and assigned so many anti-transgender people to his cabinet and staff, it's frightening!!

I called Utah senator Mike Lee's office yesterday to ask that he not support Betsy DeVos for Education Secretary (so painful after working on Misty K. Snow's campaign, made me want to cry).  Every time I hear her name I think about her statement that transgender people are "broken".  I am absolutely NOT broken, being transgender absolutely 100% no doubt FIXED me!!!!

Anyway, this has always been a favorite of mine.  I had it on an Atlantic Records compilation album, something like "Super Hits".  I'll have to look it up sometime, it was a great compilation.  It also had one of my all time favorites "Hello It's Me" by Nazz on it.

"Television" by Baxter

I went up to the Utah State Capitol this afternoon, to attend the hearing on HB-200, the mandatory testing of rape kits.  It was very interesting, I was happy that the bill passed unanimously.  I'm not sure I was aware, before, that the sexual assault and forcible rape was very high in Utah.  1 in 3 women in Utah will be a victim at some time in their life.

It was also Go Red for Women day today, so I dressed all in red.  I had several people tell me I was "The Lady in Red".

I am happy that today I was always addressed as "Ma'am" and referred to with female pronouns.  Far better than when I was in a store a couple of days ago and every single person I interacted with called me "sir" or referred to me as "he".  I was wearing a nice dress, nylons and high heels... I try not to let it bug me, but it does.

Anyway, I was enjoying singing along with "I Can't See Why" last night while I was walking/running.  I posted that song over 4 years ago on 13-Aug-2012 I thought I would post this other song by Baxter I really like.  Some fun videos too.  I really like the fan video.

"Time Machine" by Ingrid Michaelson

I was in the Einstein Bros. in Draper this morning, getting a bagel for breakfast and this song came on the overhead.  I Shazam'd it and was delighted to see that it was Ingrid Michaelson.  And like her video for "Girls Chase Boys", this video is very cool.

"1984" by Spirit

So much for making America great again... NOT!  Things like this make me sick:

It's just one nasty thing after another from our Narcissist in Chief, I can't even watch the news anymore it just makes me want to scream.

George Orwell was off by about 33 years I would say...
