"Same Old Lang Syne" by Dan Fogelberg

It is always freaks me out when I find a song like this that I would swear I'd already posted.  How could I have missed a song like this.  This song just always touched something in me.

The video telling the (true) story behind the song is cool.  Bringing back memories and wondering how different your life would be if we had made a different choice at some point in the past...

Naturally, I can't help but wonder what my life would have been like if I had grown up as a girl.  But I can't regret my life, even though I hated who I was,  it was good.  And now that I'm Rachel it's great!

Anyway, here is a newspaper article about the story:

Journal Star: http://www.pjstar.com/x1101623574/Luciano-Its-a-memory-that-I-cherish

Since I cry with this song, I thought perhaps the "the snow turned into rain" was a metaphor for his tears being the rain.  But the one video shows a letter where Dan replied and said that was another true part of the snow really did turn to rain.

"Message of Love" by The Pretenders

This song came on KCQN a few minutes ago and I don't think I've ever paid attention to the lyrics before.  It is so funny that I can know the lyrics by heart and never conceptualize their meaning.  Anyway, aside from the "as man and woman" part they are awesome!  We all need to "love each other, take care of each other".

Now look at the people
They're in the streets, in the bars
We are all of us in the gutter
Some of us are looking at the stars

Look 'round the room
Life is unkind
We fall but we keep gettin' up
Over and over and over
...
Now the reason we're here
Every man, every woman
Is to help each other
Stand by each other

"Silver Bells" by Brenda Lee

Another Christmas favorite and I think this may be my favorite rendition.  I love the feeling this song invokes.

This album was one of the favorite Christmas records in my family, one that got played over and over every year.

"Variations on a Theme by Eric Satie" by Blood, Sweat & Tears

I heard Trois Gymnopedies playing on my acupuncturist's iPod a while ago and it drove me crazy for a while trying to figure out why it sounded so familiar, but different.

I notice on the original record album cover it is listed as "Variations on a Theme by Eric Satie", with a 'C' instead of a 'K'.   Apparently the error was on the album cover: https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Erik_Satie

"This Diamond Ring" by Gary Lewis & the Playboys

Yet another song that I can't believe I haven't posted before!  This song is now associated with two epic events in my life:

This is actually the first record album I ever bought with my own money.  Prior to this, my parents or grandparents had always paid for it when I wanted a record album.  I can still visualize the record rack there in Wangsgards on 2nd Street and Washington Blvd. in Ogden, Utah.

And then earlier this year, when I received an reply to my first "coming out" email, which I had sent to one of my dearest friends Stefanie.  I read her reply and it was so loving and accepting.

I put this record on and when the first notes played I just broke down crying.  It was a delightful, wonderful, happy cry.  I was so overcome with emotion.

I don't think it had any relation to the song itself, it was just hearing those notes that I've loved for 50 years, coupled with the love and acceptance I felt.

I was pretty scared at that point, not knowing how people would react.  I picked Stefanie because she has always been such an amazing and loving woman.  I had no doubt that she would be accepting of my change.  I think it was just seeing it there in black and white that filled me with emotion.

And now I'm crying again just telling the story  :)

I decided to get the total experience again, so I dug out the record and I'm listening to it now.  At first I thought something was wrong with my mixer because there wasn't anything coming out of the right speaker.  After fooling around with it, I realized this was one of those records from the early days of Stereo where, they hard panned instruments and/or voices left or right.  I hate those early Beatles records where the instruments are all in one channel and the vocals are all in the other.  Yuck!

I notice the audio in the "Topic" video, from the Liberty/Capitol Complete Collection is in mono.

Note: the one 45 in the video is one of the cheap (?) ones where they didn't affix a color paper label, but instead printed the label right on the plastic disc.

"My Favorite Things" by We Five

I was listening to the A&M "Something Festive" album this morning.  I think it is one of the best Christmas albums ever!  Well worth the 50 cents I paid for the copy I took the picture of below, LOL!  I posted a couple of other songs from it 3 years ago on 22-Dec-2012 and last year on 26-Dec-2014.

One thing I found interesting on the album, though, the two Herb Alpert and the Tijuauna Brass tracks had the intros cut off.  The commercial for the album is also on YouTube.  That's so cool!  Originally it cost $1.29 in B.F. Goodrich stores.

"25 O'Clock" by The Dukes of Stratosphear

"What's With You" by Mose Allison

You can read more of the story on how I discovered Mose Allison in my post for 5-Aug-2011.  I just love the lyrics in many of his songs, witty and sometimes sarcastic.

You told me what I was doin' wrong
You told me that I wouldn't be here long
You told all the things I didn't do
...
Don't think I don't appreciate your grave concern
...
Don't think I don't appreciate your sage advice
...
So now won't you tell me what's with you?

Don't be fooled by love songs and lonely hearts, you're living in a twilight world...

I always thought the "Gas Distress Mix" was really fun.  And I love the "Live at the Jazz Cafe" version!  As I mentioned in my  post on 20-Jan-2015 and I still claim that "Live at the Jazz Cafe" is the best live album ever!

"Take the Long Way Home" by Supertramp

It drives me crazy when I discover that a song like this that I haven't posted until now!  This is definitely a song that I've always related to.  So many times I've taken the long way home...

But I can't find a video on YouTube with the original version.  I've found many by Rodger Hodson of Supertramp.

I like this version by Roger Hodson with vocal by Robert Wilson.  I really, really love the images in the video.

"Grey Lady of the Sea" by Simon Le Bon

I believe this is the first MP3 I have had.  My friend Robert found this wonderful song.  That had to be like, around 20 years ago.  Back in the days of 68000 Macintoshes, at least that was what we had.  It took them forever to process an MP3, or least it seemed like it.

"Almost Lucy" by Al Stewart

This yet another song that I haven't posted up until now!  Seriously!?!  I have searched both this blog and my old blog every which way I can think of and it just isn't there.

This has long been my favorite Al Stewart song.  I have always been able to relate to this song.  In looking back I've always related very closely with the woman in stories, movies, music, etc.  Now it makes perfect sense!

It's so cool there is a 45 RPM single with this song!  I'm guessing perhaps a B-side?

I was trying to find out what this mystery CD was so I stuck it in the drive on one of my computers, but it didn't identify it and I just left it in and forgot about it.  Some weeks later I accidentally clicked on something and this song started playing.  I was like WTF?  I had no idea why.  It reminded me of this song.

"Life Is Getting Better" by Javier Colon

Even after I took that nasty spill yesterday at the Genderevolution conference (where I literally shredded my pantyhose, my legs and hands).  Today my chest has started to hurt and it is extremely painful to breathe.

But even considering all of that, I have to say my life IS getting better all the time!  My life is so much better since I started living authentically!!  I am SO HAPPY living as a woman!

"Soul Experience" by Iron Butterfly

Today was the Genderevolution Conference and we had a few glitches, but it was still good.  I took a spill on my way back from Smith's to get some more cream cheese for the bagels.  I hurrying and tripped over a crack in the sidewalk and did a major face plant onto the cement.  It was bleeding pretty well so I spent 2 hours at the InstaCare getting it stitched up.  So, unfortunately, I missed our Keynote address.  But it was still a great experience!

It's awesome finding a live video too.

Last week I went into the Black Velvet Boutique (adults only!) and what an awesome store.  Leah and Dawn (the store owners) are just amazing.  We chatted for quite a while.  Everyone there was very helpful and friendly.  I even discovered something about myself that I hadn't even thought about before.  It was a wonderful experience!

Plus it reminded me of this great song, which also has a very sensuous feel to it.

Since I bought the vinyl record of this album and it came with a CD copy, I thought I would give the original CD I had to my brother.  I was playing it in the car while I was running around today before I gave it to him and had to play this song over and over...  I love this song!

I have to admit that while looking at some of the photos and videos of Dionne I wondered if she is a transgender woman like myself.  And while looking for these videos some videos saying she "is a man" popped up.  They were obviously posted by wacky people trying to sensationalize it.  (They would be wrong anyway because, like me, even if she was born with some male attributes, she *IS* a woman!!)

And, really, WTF does it matter?!?!?  SHE has a beautiful voice and has delighted millions with her singing!  Why are some people so hung up on what sex you were assigned at birth?

Speaking of which, I heard this *awesome* program on NPR's "Fresh Air" program last week called "Becoming Nicole":

NPR: http://www.npr.org/books/titles/449939030/becoming-nicole-the-transformation-of-an-american-family

It is about how one of a set of identical twins is transgender.  They talked about how scientists have discovered that while your biological sex is assigned 6 weeks into pregnancy, your brain isn't masculinized or feminized until 6 months into the pregnancy.  Usually they match up, but in rare cases, if there are any changes in the womb they might not.

"Teacher" by Jethro Tull

I was thinking this morning that a good word to describe my life is "intense"!   It's like it is stuck at full throttle, which reminded me of the chorus in Jethro Tull's "Locomotive Breath":

Old Charlie stole the handle
And the train, it won't stop going
No way to slow down

I should emphasize that my life is "intense" in a very good way, it's just that sometimes "wow what a ride!".

Anyway, I was going to post it for my song today, but then I found that I already posted it a little over 4 years ago on 13-Oct-2011.  So I thought I would post another of my favorite Jethro Tull songs today.

Interesting that the live version doesn't the flute in the bridge...

"Walkin' Around in a Dream" by Margie Rayburn

Update 22-Feb-2017: modified the YouTube link so it starts the video at 28:28 where this song starts.

I've been thinking how my life is a like a dream and it reminded me of this song.  I can't find the song on YouTube so I guess the only option is the video I made of playing an old reel-to-reel tape.

"We May Never Pass This Way (Again)" by Seals & Crofts

I saw one of my new friends this afternoon.  It is strange that a single moment can bring both great joy and great sorrow.  I'm extremely happy that, after a tremendous struggle, her and her boys are going home to be near their family.  But also extremely sad that I may never see them again.

This is another song that speaks a great truth!  Just a few of the wonderful lyrics:

All the secrets in the universe
Whisper in our ears
And all the years will come and go,
take us up, always up
...
Like Columbus in the olden days,
We must gather all our courage.
Sail our ships out on the open sea
Cast away all our fears
And all the years will come and go,
take us up, always up
...
So I wanna laugh, while the laughing is easy
I wanna cry if it makes it worthwhile
I may never pass this way again
That's why I want it with you
'Cause you make me feel like I'm more than a friend
Like I'm the journey,
and you're the journey's end

I love the all the beautiful pictures in this first video:

"I Must Confess" by Everything But the Girl

I found the song I was trying to remember in my post a few weeks ago.  What a great song this is!

All I could say, as you walked out on me
Is that I hoped you'd remembered your key
Took one last look
Took the phone off the hook
I must confess I agree

"Simply Irresistible" by Robert Palmer

How could I not follow up yesterday's post with the video they are paying homage to?

This song actually has a special meaning for me anyway.  I remember my friend Deane that used to own Recycle Records in Salt Lake City, talking to me about the great line: "She's so fine, there's no telling where the money went".  Ain't that the truth!!!

I saw the Homage to Robert Palmer's "Simply Irresistible" video a couple of weeks ago and loved it.  I intended to post it but forgot about it until I heard it on the radio (twice on KBZN 97.9 Now) this weekend.  I love this song and I love the "homage" video.  Pretty HOT!

"Never Let You Go" by INXS

Note to self: DON'T stand in front of a coffee shop on State Street in a skirt and high heels, some people will get the wrong impression!  And some people don't seem to able to take no for an answer and will chase you all over South Salt Lake...
It actually happened yesterday.  I guess it's all part of the "Total Woman Experience" (TM).  I was actually scared enough that I called 9-1-1.  My guess is that men experience that terror far less often than women do.

Anyway I was thinking about the song "Can't Stop Killing You" by Kirsty MacColl as it depicts that fear pretty well.  However, I already posted it in my previous blog on 4-Nov-2012 (when I was still pretending to be something I'm not: a man).

This song is somewhat related...

"Gonna Get Over You" by Sara Bareilles

I'm really lovin' Sara Bareilles, here's another song I love and another great video!  I love all the colors that come flying out as she comes dancing down the aisle toward the end.  And the ending where she is making the other customers uncomfortable is hilarious!

"What It Feels Like For A Girl" by Madonna

Update 6-Apr-2017: added pictures of the book covers, changed the link so instead of linking to the book on Amazon, it links to the Wikipedia page for the book.  And... okay, mostly rewrote the whole dammed post :)

From the original post: Last night I started reading a book (Whipping Girl: A Transsexual Woman on Sexism and the Scapegoating of Femininity) and it clarified something I have been thinking: the reason transgender women are so looked down upon is because we are a threat to masculinity and male privilege:

"In a male-centered gender hierarchy, where it is assumed that men are better than women and that masculinity is better than femininity, there is no greater perceived threat than the existence of trans women, who despite being born male and inheriting male privilege "choose" to be female instead.  By embracing our own femaleness and femininity, we, in a sense, cast a shadow of doubt over the supposed superiority of maleness and masculinity."

This is such a great song and video!  It speaks to the same truth:

"Girls can wear jeans and cut their hair short, wear shirts and boots. 'Cause it's OK to be a boy. But for a boy to look like a girl is degrading. 'Cause you think that being a girl is degrading."

Could you be a little weak?"

"Brave" by Sara Bareilles

This was on one of the CD's WJ gave me and I love it!

Update 17-Sep-2015: I think I can honestly say this was the worst day I've had since I transitioned and even farther back than that.  (It was in no way related to my transition.  I'm happy to say that I've only had one time where I doubted my transition and there were other factors in play that night.)

I'm sure that trying to function, yesterday, on only 2 hours of sleep didn't help.  But the main things I was doubting myself about were: in the days prior I opened up and told some things to some people who are most dear to me.  In the one case it was over something I should have dealt with 17-18 years ago.  Instead, back then, I was scared I might hurt somebody's feelings.

I came to the realization a few days ago, that if I had woman up'd all those years ago (okay, it would have been "man up" then...  no, wait, I was right the first time, I was always a woman I just didn't know it then.  :)  Actually, I could go as far as to say it very likely would have been better had I been my true self back then.  I am absolutely certain I am much stronger now and far more brave).

Anyway,  I see now that if I hadn't been afraid all those years ago, I could have taken steps to make things better.  Now almost 20 years have passed and so much water has gone under the bridge, it is hard to tell how much can be done.   I'm certain that some damage can never be undone.

This morning, after a few hours of sleep, I realized that this song was absolutely perfect for me in this situation:

You can be amazing
You can turn a phrase into a weapon or a drug
You can be the outcast
Or be the backlash of somebody's lack of love
Or you can start speaking up

Nothing's going to hurt you the way that words do
When they settle 'neath your skin
Kept on the inside and no sunlight
Sometimes a shadow wins

But I wonder what would happen if you...
Say what you wanna say
And let the words fall out, honestly
I wanna see you be brave...

"32 Flavors" - Alana Davis

An incredible song by Alana Davis, originally written and performed by Ani DeFranco.  This song has such great lyrics, some of my favorites:

"Cause someday you're gonna get hungry
And eat all of the words you just said"

"I'd never try to give my life meaning by demeaning you"

Oh hell, all of the lyrics are genius!  I think all the time "I am what I am".

Also let me send out a huge thanks to my BFF Stefanie for hooking me up with this CD in the first place along with so many others.  We have shared so much great music over the years.  Crazy to think it all started in the Sunshine Center laundromat some 20+ years ago.  Thank you for being an amazing, wonderful, incredible part of my life ever since.  XOXOXOXO
